The Stanford
Club of Washington and the Stanford Alumni Association cordially invite
you to a special evening with political science professor David Abernethy.
"Spain
in the Age of Exploration, 1492-1819"
Details
Stanford political
science professor emeritus David Abernethy
will give a lecture in connection with a special exhibit at the Seattle
Art Museum, "Spain in the Age of Exploration, 1492-1819."
About
the Exhibit
SAM and Spain's Patrimonio Nacional are working together to present Spain
in the Age of Exploration, 1492-1819. The exhibition features more than
one hundred works of art and science drawn primarily from Spanish collections,
including paintings, sculpture, tapestries, scientific instruments, maps,
armor and books. Artists represented include Hieronymus Bosch, Titian,
El Greco, Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Goya.
The exhibition focuses on Spain's perception of itself and of the empire's
role within the expanded European world, beginning with the 1492 voyage
of Christopher Columbus. Chronologically organized, the exhibit explores
four recurring themes: worldly ambition and human folly, the image of
the king, art and science, and cultural encounters.
Note: This
is a private viewing of the exhibit, and seating is limited. Tickets will
be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
About
the Professor
David Abernethy, professor of political science and senior fellow at the
Institute for International Studies, came to Stanford in 1965 after earning
bachelor and doctoral degrees from Harvard and a master's degree in philosophy/politics/economics
from Oxford. Professor Abernethy teaches courses on African politics,
European colonialism and Third World nationalism, and political and ethical
dimensions of foreign aid. He has authored a book on the rise and fall
of European overseas empires, published by Yale University Press. Professor
Abernethy received a Dean's Award for excellence in teaching in 1984.
He chaired the Faculty Senate in 1981-82 and serves this year as Senate
vice-chair. Professor Abernethy was the 2001 recipient of the Stanford
Alumni Association's Richard W. Lyman Award for faculty volunteer service.
